Are you taking the best care of your body?

Do you wake up tired in the morning or always need an afternoon nap? Do you find yourself sleepy after eating lunch? Do you have trouble falling and staying asleep?

Are you consuming copious amounts of caffeine (instead of water) to stay awake during the workday?

We should not underestimate the power a good night's sleep has over our health, nor should we neglect to remember the importance of drinking enough water every day! Keep reading this blog to learn more about the benefits of a regular sleep schedule and drinking enough water.

Don't forget, if you're living with any kind of acute or chronic pain, Fusion Performance in Cheshire, CT is here for you! Call our clinic today for an appointment.

How does lack of sleep affect your health?

No matter what your relationship to sleep is, there's no doubt you've felt the effects of not getting enough of it!

Sleep is just one of the many things our bodies require to keep them running at their top performance. Unfortunately, studies show that over 45% of the population struggles with sleep. Although it may not seem like a huge deal, lack of sleep can result in a wide range of negative consequences, such as:

  • Compromised immune system
  • Weight gain
  • Elevated blood pressure
  • Increased inflammation
  • Shorter lifespans
  • Impacts on learning and memory
  • Mental & emotional health issues

Sleep is the body's way of restoring organ function, stabilizing chemical imbalance, refreshing areas of the brain that control mood and behavior, and improving performance. It's a critical part of maintaining your health.

When we don't get enough sleep at night, it's nearly impossible to catch up on those hours. As a result, our moods can nosedive, our ability to focus gets thrown off, and our chances of developing chronic diseases increases.

There are many ways to improve your sleeping habits and get the kind of quality rest you need to function every day. Some of these don't sound that fun, but if you want to get the most out of your sleeping routine, you need to implement them.

  1. Stop hitting snooze! Get out of bed when your alarm goes off.
  2. Limit your in-bed activities (binge-watching tv-shows or scrolling on your phone) to train your mind to always associate sleep with your bed.
  3. Limit your caffeine intake, especially late in the day (3 pm or later) so you aren't awake all night
  4. Decrease stimulation from blue lights on your electronics and other sources of bright light at least 30 minutes before bedtime.
  5. Avoid exercising within two hours of your bedtime to help your body's natural process for releasing the chemicals that induce sleep.
  6. Set a sleep schedule and stick to it all week, including on weekends.

It's also vital to make sure you're sleeping on the best mattress for your body type. A mattress that is too hard can cause you to wake up achy and a mattress that is too soft will not provide the necessary support you need for proper spinal alignment!

The importance of staying hydrated for your health

It's important to hydrate yourself on a daily basis. Make sure you're not only drinking coffee and tea! Drinking water helps keep your joints lubricated and can prevent stiffness and achiness.

Water is also important for helping your body flush out toxins and metabolic waste products that may be associated with inflammation.

Many people simply don't practice recommended hydration methods. If you are exercising daily or participating in physical therapy treatments, it is especially important to make sure you stay hydrated, as you'll be removing water from your body by sweating!

It is important to make sure you drink at least a couple of full glasses of water at the start of your morning - and you can have them alongside your nutritional breakfast.

Drinking water in the morning is a small addition to your morning routine but it can prove extremely beneficial in helping you wake up and feel ready to face the day.

So drink up! Aim for at least one-third to one-half of your body weight in fluid ounces of freshwater per day. Try to keep a refillable water bottle with you during the day to remind you to stay hydrated! Never skip out on hydration if you want to feel your best!
